Water shortage in Algeria

Introduction:

Salaam Allah Alaykum “May the Peace of Allah Be Upon you”, my name is Ahmed, I am from Algeria, I have been working as Financial man in the headquarter of the Ministry of Finance in Algiers since 2003 just after have finished my bachelor’s degree in this field, I am now student at the British Council in Tanzania (program 2103), such required long preparation period for English Academic purposes after having been shortlisted by the Australian Aid authorities in order to study Master in my field at their universities. The aim of this scholarship is to acquire knowledges and improve my English skills which are strongly linked to contribute in the development of the economy of my home country on return so in this case I am interested in the shortage of drinking water in my country, such big problem which occurs nowadays so you are welcome to support my topic above by giving any suggestions, ideas or advice considered helpful to resolve this issue.

The shortage of drinking water in many areas of the world is now a serious problem. At least 80% of arid and semi-arid countries, like Algeria, where 40% of the world's population live, have serious periodic droughts. To resolve this crisis, different methods of solar desalination have been used in several countries. Among these is solar distillation a process where solar energy is used to distil fresh water from saline water for drinking purposes and other applications. The work on active solar distillation system was carried out by many researchers. It is well known that in solar distillation, the radiation from the sun evaporates water inside a chamber at a temperature higher than the ambient. The principle of operation is the greenhouse effect provided by the glass cover. Energy balances are made for each element of still; solar time, direction of beam radiation, clear sky radiation, optical properties of the cover, convection outside the still, convection and evaporation inside are accounted. The most studied model is the solar distiller, which has the following advantages: low installation cost, independent water production at the point of use and no need for trained maintenance staff. But it has important disadvantages, such as low efficiency and problems associated with the deposit of salt, deposit of scale and corrosion.

Algeria, like other southern Mediterranean countries, is enduring water shortage which will get worse over the few next years. Algeria is known as the country most severely threatened by water stress and scarcity by early 2020. One of the important factors exacerbating this problem is the concentration of three quarters of the inhabitants and consequently the industrial and agricultural activities along the 1200 km coastal zone, which has led to an increase in the pollution of the existing water resources. Droughts due to climate change and pollution are the most important factors destabilizing the existing balance. Therefore, the desalination of sea water can provide a solution to one of the most urgent and vital and problems, of balancing and enhancing water resources, as the wide variation of rainfall, from more than 2000 mm/y in the north coastal region dropping to less than 100 mm/y in the southern Sahara, should be taken in account. Given these circumstances, we should focus on the need for desalination, the desalination program, and also the strategy and the vision of desalination in addition to other non-conventional water resources that might guarantee the optimum conditions for integrated management and sustainable development.

  2. Hello Ahmed!

Congratulations! And thank you for this topic, this is really a very interesting issue.
In order to make an important improvements regarding to issue of water scarcity in our world today, more than one solution is necessary. So, what strategies, exactly, is Algeria adopting at the moment? What awareness activities is the country developing in order to sensitize the communities? Lara

    1. Thank you Lara to be interested, I think the integration of renewable resources in desalination and water purification is becoming increasingly attractive. This is justified by the fact that areas of fresh water shortages have plenty of solar energy and these technologies have low operating and maintenance costs, This why the Algerian authorities have decided to choose this solution as strategy to reduce the issue of water shortage in Algeria.
Coming back to your question about the communities awareness which is "common interest" let me let you know that for nearly 40 years the environmental issues and sustainable development are at the center of government concerns in Algeria. This environmental awareness has taken place following the UN Conference on the Human Environment (UNCHD, Stockholm, 1972), resulted in Algeria by the establishment of the National Committee for the Environment (NCE) in 1974. In this view the Algerian government is continuing the strategy of whatever national awareness by educating children, training and mobilizing young people"future generation", sensitizing citizens and international awareness by transmitting the Algerian experience to the international communities which are suffering due to this phenomenal.
Finally, I wish that I could reply effectively to your interests towards this sensitive subject, I will be glad to send me your feedback on this analyse.
      Regards.

    Hello Ahmed,
Water shortage is a global issue around world. The UN is still trying to adopt a resolution to tackle this universal problem. I want to thank you for your attempt to suggest a way forward, especially, the instillation of a Solar Distillation system in order to distil fresh water from saline water for drinking.

Please commend on these concerns: 1.Will desilination be a long term solution in solving the problems of water shortage in Algeria? 2. What are the economic analyses you considered to arrive at this suggestion?

    Thanks.
    William

    1. Thank you William for your interest on my topic, I think that the water desalination policy in Algeria is just a temporary solution to struggle this phenomenal pending the establishment of an operative and useful strategies to preserve the drinking water and protect the environment from desertification the drought.

Returning to your second interest, let inform you that many countries that have severe water problems also have weak public finance. The economic impact of water policies is important for both the general macro-economic management and adequate funding for water supply and sanitation criteria. A sustainable policy is a policy that would have a positive impact on public finances at national and local level through such a tax, a price increase, a fee, a reduction in subsidies, or the avoidance of capital expenditures major. It must, in the same way help the financial situation of companies in water services, irrigation, etc..
I would like to see your feedback on it.
      Regards.

  4. Thank you for allow us reading for questioning an comment. My country has a lot of rivers passing by. However, pure water shortage is a big problem mainly in rural area. since similarly we have coast line of about 2700km, what is the possibilities of a join venture with my country regarding this future threat?

    Regards

    1. Thank you James for being interested to my topic, according to your interest the answer to your question is too easy, so regarding that your country has a great cost line, your government should think about this main issue by making investment in this field. First of all Mozambique should look for his water reserves by protecting them, sensitize citizens about the importance of preserving groundwater and rainwater and educate children and young people"future generation", then as I reported in my topic the most investment model is the solar distiller, which has low installation cost, independent water production at the point of use and no need for trained maintenance staff, I think your country is able to follow this model by encouraging companies specialized in this Technic.
Looking forward for seeing your feedback.
      Regards.
      Ahmed.
